Established in September of 1982 by private act, when the office of County Judge was

divested of any and all judicial powers.  Judge A. Andrew Jackson was appointed in

1981 by the County Commission to serve with the County Judge for incarceration of

juveniles until the private act became effective on September 1, 1982.

Judge Jackson was elected to this position in 1982, 1990, 1998 and in 2006.  He will

serve an eight year term until 2014.

By the private act, the County Clerk was appointed as the clerk of the court, but does

not serve in that capacity.  Judy G. Wilson was appointed in 1982 to serve as the

Court Clerk and continues to serve as clerk at present.  The only duties of the county

clerk in regard to this court is to deposit any money taken in by this court and invest any

funds as ordered to be deposited with the Court.  Other than the monetary issues, our

court is autonomous.

The court is in session every week on Wednesday and the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the

month.  We do hold court on any day that we have an emergency hearing.   Also, the

referee, Alan Kerns, holds court two days a month for child support cases.

The court has 8 employees. Each employee has a designated area of duty, however, the

staff has been cross-trained to perform and assist with most all jobs.  The board of education

provides the school liaison position.

We hear cases for probate of decedent’s estates and all other related matters to probate,

such as claims, exceptions to claims, interim and annual accountings and small estate affidavits.

We hear cases regarding conservatorships, guardianships, paternity, legitimation, name changes,

minors settlement cases and child support.  We hear custody cases involving dependent and

neglected children and cases of termination of parental rights.

We hear delinquent, unruly and traffic cases for juveniles and contributing cases for adults. We

provide 24 hour county probation for juveniles and for detention of juveniles. Our court provides

a certified traffic safety course, an alcohol and drug class and a class on Issues In Honesty on

site for our juveniles.
