White Bluff
White Bluff, established in 1867, was incorporated in 1869. As early as 1803, William and Thomas Gentry staked out claims in the Turnbull Creek area. About 1828 the White Bluff Iron Forge was established near the White Bluffs on Turnbull Creek however by 1859 it had been abandoned. The town took its name from this forge. With the completion of the Nashville & Northwestern Railroad in 1864, and the evacuation of the Union forces, White Bluff began to revive.
In the 1880’s Mrs. Thomas Overton owned and operated a hotel. During the late 19th century, Nashvillans were often known to take day trips during the summer to picnic in the country. In 1902, the Farmers and Merchants Bank was built with the added distinction of being the first brick building in town. In 1993, the bank was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was also about this time the U.S. Highway, Broadway of America” (now Highway 70) was completed from New York to San Francisco. This important transportation corridor is “Main Street” for the Town of White Bluff.
Over the past several years, White Bluff has experienced a growth explosion as people from Nashville and the Cumberland Basin have moved west on the Highland Rim. www.townofwhitebluff.com
